What Odoo 20 could change for manufacturers and distributors

New software releases always come with a long list of features. But which ones actually matter to your business?

With Odoo 20 set to be unveiled the Odoo Experience in Brussels this week, we take a look at three upcoming changes that could solve real challenges we see often in manufacturing, distribution and wholesale businesses:

  • AI that is built into everyday work, not bolted on so you don't have to wait on someone to reassign a lead or chase up a task.
  • AI-driven accounting for people who aren't accountants so business owners and GMs can trust the numbers without needing a finance background.
  • Quality-of-life improvements to mobile and messaging so day-to-day work is simply easier to do.

Here is what each one is expected to do, in plain terms.

1) AI that is built into everyday work

A lot of "AI features" in business software are really just a chatbot bolted onto the side, i.e. something you have to remember to open and ask.

Odoo 20 is expected to take a different approach: AI woven into the tools people already use, working in the background rather than as a separate step.

What this could look like in practice:

  • Automatic lead hand-offs: Cold leads get reassigned automatically instead of sitting untouched until someone notices.
  • Hands-free follow-ups: Routine follow-ups such as status checks, task reminders or vendor nudges happen without relying on someone remembering to send them.
  • In-line answers: Questions get answered directly where you are already working, without switching to a report or another screen.

The value here isn't the AI itself. It is the manual chasing and reassigning that stops being necessary. For a business trying to grow without adding headcount, that is where the time gets saved.

2) Operational wins for manufacturing & supply chains

For manufacturers, distributors and wholesalers, growth often gets bottlenecked by manual tracking steps. Odoo 20 addresses these operational pain points directly:

  • Automated serial and lot assignment: Upon completing a job on the Shop Floor touch screen, lot and serial numbers generate and link automatically, speeding up stock movement from production to the warehouse.
  • Direct subcontracting on RFQs: Service lines on RFQs can now link directly to subcontracted Manufacturing Orders, eliminating messy workarounds when outsourcing production components.
  • Per-company lead times: Multi-entity operations can maintain unique lead times for the exact same master product across different business entities, giving a far more accurate picture of stock availability.

The business impact here are fewer manual tracking errors on the assembly line and a far clearer view of lead times across multi-company supply chains.

3) AI-driven accounting for people who aren't accountants

Many manufacturing and distribution firms run lean, with an owner or GM keeping an eye on the books without a full-time accountant watching every entry. Catching an unusual transaction or a data-entry mistake often comes down to luck or waiting for the external accountant's next visit.

Odoo 20 is expected to close that gap:

  • Automated anomaly flagging: Discrepancies and unusual entries, such as duplicate vendor payments or entries out of standard pattern, get flagged immediately.
  • GM-friendly financial summaries: Overviews provide plain-English summaries of where the business stands, rather than complex ledgers that require formal finance training to interpret.
  • Safer in-house bookkeeping: Foundational bookkeeping becomes far safer to manage in-house when the system catches basic human errors as they happen.

You won’t (or should) be replacing your accountant or a bookkeeper soon but it does mean the risky gap between accountant visits shrinks as problems get caught closer to when they happen, not discovered weeks later.

4) Quality-of-life improvements that add up

Not every meaningful change is a new capability. Some of the most valuable improvements are just things getting easier to use day to day.

  • A touch-optimised mobile experience: Odoo's interface is expected to get a UX upgrade that is built around touch rather than adapted from the desktop layout. For staff who aren't sitting at a desk (e.g. warehouse, field, sales on the road) that is the difference between actually using the app and working around it.
  • A reorganised Discuss module: A dedicated navigation bar now separates your communication channels (e.g. WhatsApp, Live Chats, email aliases etc.) instead of everything sitting under in one. Customer messages get dedicated spaces so urgent inquiries never get buried under internal noise.

The business impact here is simple: conversations don't get lost and customers don't wait longer for a reply because their message was buried between internal notifications.

Why these changes matter together

None of this is really about AI or accounting or an app redesign as separate stories. They are about removing the small frictions that slow a lean team down, whether that is a lead sitting untouched, a bookkeeping mistake nobody catches in time or a customer message lost in a busy feed.

Full details will be confirmed live at Odoo Experience in Brussels. Stay tuned for further updates as more features are demonstrated!
